Spencer Morrow Investigations.

Uncle Bobby wanted to come with us downtown to see my office and I thought it was a good idea. Depressed as he was over the Roxie thing, I didn’t want him sitting alone in my house all day long. He might as well come with us and see some of the sights in Baton Rouge. I’d never seen the sights myself, so it would be fun for both of us.

Nick stopped on the way and I picked up a bag of pastries to keep us fortified until lunch. I had coffee on hand and I planned to make a pot as soon as we arrived. I noticed Uncle Bobby ate a lot when he didn’t have a jar of shine in his hand. He’d definitely lost weight since Daddy died and now Roxie had abandoned him. He could use a few pounds. I didn’t want him getting sick.

He strolled through the office, glanced at the blank walls, and said, “You need some pictures in here, girl, to liven this place up.”

“I guess I could use a few.” I was wondering what kind of art would suit my office walls when two detectives arrived unannounced.

“Good morning, Mrs. McAvoy. I’m Detective Andy Gerome and this is Detective Ann Taylor. We’d like to ask you a few questions.”

“What about?”

“It has come to light that your husband’s accident was not an accident at all. The brakes on the Bronco your husband was driving had been tampered with. Someone deliberately tried to kill Brad McAvoy. Any idea who that someone would be?”

“Someone tried to kill Brad? I can’t believe that.”

“How was your marriage to Brad McAvoy?” asked Gerome. “Were you and your husband getting along, ma’am?”

Bobby pushed closer to the detectives. “Hey, watch your mouth, buddy. My niece and her husband are newlyweds, for chrissakes. She didn’t try to kill him. Go stick your snotty nose somewhere else.”

Nick smiled at Bobby.

“I can’t believe you asked me that question,” I said to Detective Gerome.

Nick took a stance in front of Gerome and held up a hand. “Hold up. No more questions like that unless you have the tiniest bit of evidence to base it on. You’d better start this interview over.”

“Okay, starting over,” said Detective Taylor. She seemed to be the more mellow of the two. Good cop to Gerome’s bad cop. “Do you know of anyone who would want to hurt your husband?”

“Tons of guys Brad has put away while he worked in Violent Crime. He was Chief until recently and I would’ve thought you guys would be the first ones to think of grudge-holders that Brad locked up. Who do you answer to at headquarters anyway? Is it Lance Henning?”

Taylor ignored my question and asked one of her own. “Anyone in particular that your husband mentioned?”

“I can think of one person recently who said he’d get even with Brad,” I said.

“Name?” Andy Gerome was a short, overweight Detective who was never going to pass his next department physical. He had pulled a notebook out of his jacket and was ready to jot things down.
